Red raspberries are soft, collective fruits made of tiny, juice-filled drupes; the stem has small prickles or thorns.

They are best picked when ripe. Once picked, they bruise easily and lose firmness quickly.

Position

Raspberries prefer full sun in a sheltered position, although they can tolerate partial shade.
You can plant them at any time of the year, as long as the soil isn’t waterlogged and the plants aren’t exposed to extreme frost. Established raspberry plants can tolerate temperatures as low as approximately -10°C, depending on the variety and growing conditions.
Red raspberries prefer growing in the ground, but a large container can also work.

Size

Raspberries are vigorous, cane-forming plants. Most varieties benefit from a trellis, fence, or other support system to keep the canes upright and make harvesting easier.

Soil

Raspberries thrive in fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained, and slightly acidic soil. Keep the planting area weed-free.
They dislike waterlogged or poorly drained soils and generally do not perform well in shallow, chalky soils.
The ideal soil pH is approximately 5.5–6.5.
Dig a planting hole approximately 50 cm wide and 50 cm deep, and before planting, improve the soil by incorporating plenty of organic compost and acid compost into your garden soil. Plant at the same depth as it was growing in its container and water thoroughly after planting.
Add a bag of Volcanic rock dust which contains over 72 minerals and trace elements to boost soil health and increase important micro-organisms essential for healthy soil.

Mulch

Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it away from the tree trunk as it may cause excess moisture and damage the trunk. Pine bark will retain the moisture in the soil and will assist in preventing weeds from taking over.

Watering

This bramble needs plenty of water, especially during hot weather. In general, you can water your plants twice a week. If the weather is hot and dry, water them daily. Avoid wetting the stems and leaves too much to prevent them from rotting.

Fertilising

Apply one teaspoon of our slow-release berry fertiliser every 4 months.

Pests and Diseases

Good garden hygiene is important. Remove fallen fruit and leaves and keep the area around the plants free of weeds and debris.

Raspberries may be affected by aphids, mites and other pests, as well as fungal diseases, particularly during prolonged wet weather.

Regular applications of Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control ) will assist in either prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the plant with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.

Watch for root rot (if overwatered) and fungal infections during wet periods.

Pruning

Cut back dead canes end of Autumn into winter. Prune canes that bore fruit to promote new growth.

Harvesting

Raspberries are ready for harvesting when fully ripe and easily come off the plant when gently tugged. Harvest regularly to ensure you pick them at their peak flavour and quality.
