Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to water my plants?

Depending on the plant, e.g. blueberries and cranberries require water daily in very hot weather, but goji berries and elderberries can be watered only three times a week in very hot weather. Our cherry tree must not be watered from the time the berries turn pink until after harvesting. Whereas a Guava tree only needs a good soaking once per month if it does not rain.
We give watering advice to every customer when they purchase plants.

Do I need to water my plants in winter?

Some fruit trees do not require water in winter but most require just enough to keep their roots damp, but not waterlogged. Berry plants do require watering once or twice a week during winter.

Can I plant fruit trees in pots?

Citrus trees do very well in large pots, minimum size ½ metre square. They will still give plenty of fruit for many years.
It is best to plant stone fruit trees (peaches, plums, nectarines, apricot, etc.) in the ground as their root systems grows deep and wide.
Nut and cherry trees should be planted well away from power lines, walls, drainpipes, etc. as their roots spread significantly.

What fertiliser should I use?

We recommend Talborne Organics fertilizers as they are not harmful to the environment and work extremely well. There are different ratio’s of fertilisers for different types of plants and trees – some require more nitrogen, other more potassium, etc.
We recommend Talborne Organic 3:1:5

How big must the pot or hole be for a tree?

The minimum size hole or pot for a small plant is 50cm wide and deep. Bigger trees naturally require a much larger pot. The bigger the better
We recommend our berry plants be planted in a pot or in the ground 50 x 50 x 50cms

What trees, plants make a good hedge or wind break?

We recommend the Aronia berry for hedges as it grows to about 1 mt in height and 3mt in width. It is a fast grower and gets quite dense in a short time. Elderberry Trees make an attractive wind break and Goji berries grow tall and dense enough to protect areas.

What can be planted to cover unsightly walls and block the view into my garden?

Elderberries and Goji Berries grow tall enough to cover unsightly walls and to block neighbours’ vision. They both grow quickly. Elderberry gives a lovely show of white flowers in spring.

Why do I need to have Lithuanian Peat Moss and acid compost for my blueberry and cranberry plants?

In order to bring the pH of soil down from 7 to 4.5, our farmer recommends Lithuanian or Canadian Spaghnum Peat Moss. Over many years of trial and error, he believes that this peat moss is the most suitable. It is true that peat moss only grows 1cm per year but the bogs are constantly being revitalized to ensure that there is no shortage of peat moss.

What does cross pollination mean?

What does grafted mean?

It is a fact that trees that have been grafted, fruit much quicker than those grown from seeds or pips. Farmers take root stock from a healthy tree and graft it to a stem from a tree that produces healthy and plentiful fruits. In this way they ensure that we get the best of both trees.

How to keep birds from eating the fruit?

Twenty or Forty percent shade netting is probably the only way to prevent birds, monkeys, pets, etc from eating the fruit. You can try tying muslin jewellery bags over each fruit as well.

What can I use for the bugs on my plants?

We recommend a mixture of one tsp of Neem Oil, and a squirt of dishwashing liquid into 1 liter of water. Sprayed frequently (10 days – 2 weeks) onto the leaves of the plants, keep the bad pests at bay, and does not kill the good insects.
It is 100% organic.
