Springcrest Peach Tree Fruited 20L

R590.00

Prunus Persica ‘Springcre

Springcrest is a semi-freestone yellow-flesh peach. It is an easy-growing, reliable, early-season variety, and it blossoms usually around August/September

Springcrest is a lovely, fine-textured, juicy peach.

Tomatoes and potatoes should be kept away from peach trees, as they spread blight. Also, avoid planting raspberry bushes near peach trees.

Planting chamomile and comfrey helps add nutrients to the soil, serving as a natural form of fertilizer.

These peaches are good for Fresh Eating, Desserts, Pies, Canning, and Preserves.

Position

Full sun is ideal, although they can tolerate some shade. However, they will yield more fruit and grow more vigorously with increased sun exposure. They are really easy to grow. Plant at least 4m apart.

Size

Springcrest is a small tree reaching 4m. Plan the site before planting, keeping the tree a safe distance away from external walls, electrical lines, and other trees. Plant in a protected area if possible, as strong winds can damage branches and leaves.

Soil

Well-drained, fertile soil; avoid waterlogging. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the nursery bag and about the same depth as the root ball. Loosen the surrounding soil to encourage new root growth. Carefully remove the tree from its container without damaging the roots. If the roots are circling around the root ball, gently tease them apart to encourage outward growth.

Place the tree in the centre of the hole so that the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Do not bury the trunk or graft union. Refill the hole with the original soil, gently firming it around the roots to eliminate air pockets. Avoid adding excessive fertiliser directly into the planting hole.
Refill the hole with the original soil, with a bag of compost, gently firming it around the roots to eliminate air pockets.

Adding half a bag of our Volcanic Rock Dust (R25 per bag) and a bag of Superfrass (R25 per bag) will assist in rapid growth. They also protect the roots from being eaten by insects.

Watering

Water deeply immediately after planting to settle the soil around the roots. Continue watering regularly during the first growing season, especially during dry periods.

Too much water can cause root rot, but do not allow the roots to dry out completely.

Mulching

Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimetres away from the tree trunk (any closer may cause excess moisture and damage the trunk). This will retain the moisture in the soil and will prevent weeds from taking over.

Fertilising

Apply one teaspoon of our slow-release nitrogen-rich berry fertiliser every 4 months.

Pruning

Prune the top and sides of your peach tree regularly in Spring and early Autumn to prevent it from growing too large, which will also allow light into the centre of the tree. It will be easier to harvest the fruit.

Obliterate dead or diseased branches whenever they appear and dispose of them promptly.

Pests and Diseases

Aphids, citrus psylla, red scale, citrus greening. Spraying regularly with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control) will assist in either prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the tree with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.

Practice good garden hygiene (remove fallen fruit and leaves).

Watch for root rot (caused by overwatering) and fungal infections during wet periods.
