Thornless Red Raspberry

Our Thornless Red raspberry variety will bear fruit every year in summer. Raspberries are self-pollinating.

They are best picked when ripe. Once picked they can bruise very easily and start to lose their firmness quite quickly.

Position

Raspberries prefer full sun in a sheltered position, although they can tolerate partial shade.
You can plant them at any time of year, as long as the soil isn’t waterlogged and the plants aren’t exposed to extreme frost. Established raspberry plants can tolerate temperatures as low as approximately -10°C, depending on the variety and growing conditions.
Red raspberries prefer growing in the ground, but a large container can also work.

Size

Raspberries are vigorous, cane-forming plants. Most varieties benefit from a trellis, fence, or other support system to keep the canes upright and make harvesting easier.

Soil

Raspberries thrive in fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained, and slightly acidic soil. Keep the planting area weed-free.
They dislike waterlogged or poorly drained soils and generally do not perform well in shallow, chalky soils.
The ideal soil pH is approximately 5.5–6.5.
Dig a planting hole approximately 50 cm wide and 50 cm deep, and before planting, improve the soil by incorporating plenty of organic compost and acid compost into your garden soil. Plant at the same depth as it was growing in its container and water thoroughly after planting.

We stock Volcanic Rock Dust which contains organic minerals and trace elements to boost soil health and increase important micro-organisms essential for healthy soil.

Mulch

Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimetres away from the tree trunk (any closer may cause excess moisture and damage the trunk). This will retain the moisture in the soil and will prevent weeds from taking over.

Watering

Couple of times a week. Once a day in very hot weather. Do not overwater as this causes root rot.                                                                         Fertilising

Once in spring and again in summer with a slow release, organic fertiliser.

Use our slow-release nitrogen-rich fertiliser, like our berry fertiliser. Apply 1 teaspoon of our berry fertiliser every 4-5 months.

Pruning

Cut back dead canes end of Autumn into winter. Prune canes that bore fruit to promote new growth.

Pests and Diseases

Good garden hygiene is important. Remove fallen fruit and leaves and keep the area around the plants free of weeds and debris.

Raspberries may be affected by aphids, mites and other pests, as well as fungal diseases, particularly during prolonged wet weather.

Regular applications of Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control ) will assist in either prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the plant with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.

Watch for root rot (if overwatered) and fungal infections during wet periods.

Harvesting

Raspberries are ready for harvesting when fully ripe and easily come off the plant when gently tugged. Harvest regularly to ensure you pick them at their peak flavour and quality. The darker they are the sweeter.

PLEASE NOTE: Mulch of pine bark or pine needles is a great way to lower the Ph of soil and to add organic matter, but please make sure when using it as a mulch on top of the soil to not have it touching the branches of the plant. This may cause the branches to rot and get infected especially with new and one to two year old branches
