Thornless Red Raspberry with Soils

Our Thornless Red raspberry variety will bear fruit every year in summer. Raspberries are self-pollinating.

They are best picked when ripe. Once picked they can bruise very easily and start to lose their firmness quite quickly.

Raspberries prefer full sun in a sheltered position, although they can tolerate partial shade.

They can be planted at any time of year, provided the soil is not waterlogged and the plants are not exposed to extreme frost. Established raspberry plants can tolerate temperatures as low as approximately -10°C, depending on the variety and growing conditions.

Size

Raspberries are vigorous, cane-forming plants. Most varieties benefit from a trellis, fence, or other support system to keep the canes upright and make harvesting easier.

Soil Type

Raspberries thrive in fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained, and slightly acidic soil. Keep the planting area weed-free.
They dislike waterlogged or poorly drained soils and generally do not perform well in shallow, chalky soils.
The ideal soil pH is approximately 5.5–6.5.
Dig a planting hole approximately 50 cm wide and 50 cm deep, and before planting, improve the soil by incorporating plenty of organic compost and acid compost into your garden soil. Plant at the same depth as it was growing in its container and water thoroughly after planting.

The Red Raspberry plant with soils includes:

Berry Mix (to add some acid)

Volcanic rock dust

Pine Bark Mulch

An optional extra – Apply 1 teaspoon every 4-5 months of our slow-release nitrogen-rich berry fertiliser R50.

Volcanic rock dust, contains organic minerals and trace elements to boost soil health and increase important micro-organisms essential for healthy soil.

Mulch

Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimetres away from the tree trunk (any closer may cause excess moisture and damage the trunk). This will retain the moisture in the soil and will prevent weeds from taking over.

Watering

This bramble needs plenty of water, especially during hot weather. In general, you can water your plants twice a week. If the weather is hot and dry, water them daily. Avoid wetting the stems and leaves too much to prevent them from rotting.

Fertilising

Use a slow-release fertiliser twice a year – once in spring and once in summer. Our slow-release berry fertiliser is an optional extra! When planting your tree, use between 5 and 15 centimetres of mulch to boost the soil.

Pests and Diseases

Good garden hygiene is important. Remove fallen fruit and leaves and keep the area around the plants free of weeds and debris.

Raspberries may be affected by aphids, mites and other pests, as well as fungal diseases, particularly during prolonged wet weather.

Regular applications of Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control ) will assist in either prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the tree with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.

Watch for root rot (if overwatered) and fungal infections during wet periods.

Pruning

At the end of Autumn/ winter, prune back the canes that bore fruit in the summer to promote new growth and keep your bramble tidy. After the last summer harvest, promptly remove the old stems at the soil level.

Harvesting

Raspberries are ready for harvesting when fully ripe and easily come off the plant when gently tugged. Harvest regularly to ensure you pick them at their peak flavour and quality. The darker they are the sweeter.
