Position
The Beurre Bosc tree thrives in full sun or partial shade, with protection from strong winds. They should be planted about 4 to 5 metres away from other trees and between 2.5 and 3 metres from sewer pipes, buildings, fences, and patios. Before you plant your pear tree, put it in a bucket or drum of water to keep the roots from drying out while you dig its hole. Then, fill the hole with loose, rich topsoil to provide the roots with the best source of nutrients.
Size
This pear tree reaches a height of about 6 to 8 metres when it is fully mature. They generally start to fruit when they are about 3 years old, but bear their first complete harvest at around 5 to 7 years old.
Soil Type
As with most fruit trees, the Beurre Bosc tree needs fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid planting it in clay soil. If your soil is not in great shape, the tree responds well to fertiliser, which adds nutrients to the ground and creates a favourable environment for the plant to thrive.
Watering
Once you’ve planted your tree, please give it a good, thorough soak with water. After that, please continue to keep it well-watered, especially during dry spells.
Mulching
Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimetres away from the tree trunk (any closer may cause excess moisture and damage the trunk). This will retain the moisture in the soil and will prevent weeds from taking over.
Fertilising
Apply 1 teaspoon of our slow-release nitrogen-rich berry fertiliser every 4-5 months.
Pruning
A light pruning once a year keeps your Beurre Bosc pear tree in optimal condition.
Pests and Diseases
Aphids, citrus psylla, red scale, citrus greening. Spraying regularly with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control) will assist in either prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the tree with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.
Practice good garden hygiene (remove fallen fruit and leaves).
Watch for root rot (caused by overwatering) and fungal infections during wet periods.
Harvesting
Your pears will continue to ripen when they are picked. So, it is best to pick them when they are fully sized, but still firm to the touch. Then, leave them to ripen at room temperature and enjoy them at leisure.
