Persea americana ‘Fuerte’

Fuerte Avocado Tree (Type B)

The Fuerte avocado tree is a popular cultivar, prized for its delicious, creamy fruit and smooth, green skin. For better pollination and fruit production, plant it alongside a Type A avocado variety, such as Hass or Pinkerton.
Fruit Description
Fuerte avocados are pear-shaped, with smooth, thin, green skin that remains green when ripe. The flesh is buttery and creamy, with a mild, slightly nutty flavour, making it ideal for fresh eating, salads, sandwiches and a variety of culinary uses.
Fuerte thrives in subtropical and warm temperate climates. It is relatively cold-tolerant compared with some other avocado cultivars, although prolonged frost and freezing temperatures can damage the tree.
Young trees are particularly sensitive to cold and should be protected from frost until established. Planting in a sheltered position will also help protect the tree from cold winds.
Additional factual note: Fuerte is known for its large, spreading growth habit, and its fruit retains its green colour when ripe.

Position

Plant your Fuerte avocado tree in a sunny spot sheltered from the wind. Allow about 7.5 to 10 meters between your avocado trees. The tree’s size can be controlled for smaller gardens.

The Fuerte cultivar is a type B avocado, meaning that flowers open first as males, then close and reopen as females. So, plant them about 7.5 to 10 meters from a type A tree, which will have the opposite sex flower simultaneously. This helps bees to cross-pollinate.

Size

The Fuerte avocado tree is a vigorous, spreading evergreen that can reach approximately 12 meters in height under favourable growing conditions. Regular pruning helps maintain a manageable size and encourages healthy growth.

Soil Type

The Fuerte avocado trees need plenty of water, but soggy soil can lead to root rot. So, the soil needs to be sandy or loamy that drains well. Soil with a pH of between 5.0 and 7.0 is best for avos. Plant with at least one bag of acid compost.

Give your plants the best possible start by adding a bag of Volcanic Rock Dust (R25 per bag) to the soil. Volcanic Rock Dust helps replenish essential minerals and trace elements that have been depleted from our soils over time.

We also recommend adding a bag of Superfrass (R25 per bag) when planting. Superfrass provides a natural source of NPK and micronutrients to encourage strong, healthy growth, while also helping to improve the plant’s natural resistance to pests.

Together, these products help create a nutrient-rich growing environment and give your plants the foundation they need to establish and thrive.

Watering

Avocado trees are particularly demanding when it comes to water. They want plenty of it. A mature tree may drink up to 75 liters of water a day. Generally, your tree should be watered two to three times a week unless it has been particularly dry.

Mulching

Apply organic mulch to your avocado tree year-round.

Use from 2 to 5 centimeters of pine bark mulch to protect the roots from UV damage and drying out. It retains moisture and maintains an optimal pH. Do not let the mulch touch the plant stem, as it may cause infection or rot.

Fertilising

Apply 1 teaspoon of our slow-release nitrogen-rich All Plant fertiliser every 4-5 months.

Pruning

Prune your Fuerte avocado tree at the end of winter or the beginning of spring, using clean, sterilized pruning tools to reduce the risk of spreading diseases between trees. Keep the canopy open, light, and well ventilated by removing overcrowded or crossing branches. Trim off low-growing horizontal branches that hang close to the ground, and remove any dead, damaged, or diseased growth. Remove any shoots or growth that develops below the graft, as this growth comes from the rootstock and should not be allowed to develop.

Pests and Diseases

Regularly spraying with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control) can help manage common pests and support overall plant health. If aphids or mites are already present, first wash the tree thoroughly with a strong jet of water to dislodge the pests. Once the foliage has dried, spray with Neem Oil or EM Control according to the product instructions.
Practice good garden hygiene by removing fallen fruit and leaves from around the tree, as these can harbour pests and fungal diseases.
Avoid overwatering, as waterlogged soil can lead to root rot. During wet or humid periods, monitor the tree for signs of fungal diseases and ensure good air circulation around the foliage.

Harvesting

Fuerte avocados mature on the tree but do not soften until they have been picked.
Leave the fruit on the tree until it has reached maturity. Picking immature avocados too early may result in fruit that shrivels rather than ripens properly.
As a general guide, start by picking one or two of the largest fruits and letting them ripen indoors. If they soften evenly and develop a creamy texture, the remaining fruit may be ready for harvesting. If they shrivel or remain rubbery, allow the remaining fruit more time to mature.
Harvest carefully using secateurs or a suitable picking tool, leaving a short piece of stem attached to the fruit to help reduce damage.
Once picked, allow the avocados to ripen at room temperature. A ripe Fuerte avocado will yield gently to light pressure and have a creamy, buttery texture.
