Position
Plant the Dwarf Early Red Apple in a full sun position, receiving at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Ensure good air circulation around the tree to reduce disease pressure and improve fruit quality. Space trees approximately 2.5 to 4 meters apart, depending on the rootstock used.
Size
This is a compact fruit tree that typically grows to between 2 and 3.5 meters in height when fully mature, with a similar spread. Its small size makes it ideal for home gardens, containers, or high-density planting
Soil Type:
Dwarf Early Red apple trees grow best in well-drained, fertile sandy loam soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Improve soil quality by adding half a bag of Volcanic Rock Dust (R25 per bag) for minerals and trace elements, and a bag of Superfrass (R25 per bag) at planting to boost nutrients (NPK and micronutrients) and support strong, healthy growth while also helping protect against pests.
Watering
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods and fruit development. Avoid waterlogging, as apples do not tolerate poorly drained soil. Container-grown trees may require more frequent watering.
Mulching
Apply a layer of pine bark mulch around the base of the tree to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch 10 to 20 cm away from the trunk to prevent rot and pest issues.
Fertilising
Use our slow-release nitrogen-rich all-plant fertilizer. Apply 1 teaspoon every 4-5 months.
Pruning
Prune during winter dormancy to shape the tree and encourage strong fruiting wood. Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Light summer pruning can be done to maintain shape and improve airflow.
Pests and Diseases
Dwarf apple trees may be affected by common pests such as aphids, codling moth, and mites, as well as diseases like powdery mildew and apple scab. Regular monitoring and treatment with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM) Control will assist with prevention or post-treatment. If you already have pests, wash the tree with a strong stream of water. When dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control. Consistency is key.
Harvesting
The Dwarf Early Red Apple is an early-season variety, often ready for harvest in late spring to early summer, depending on the climate. Fruit is ready when it develops a deep red color and separates easily from the tree with a gentle twist.
