Fuerte Avocado Tree Grafted

Fuerte trees require a pollinator; the Hass and Ryan are Type B and will work well. The Fuerte avocado tree is a popular cultivar known for its smooth, green skin and delicious, creamy fruit.

Fuerte avocados are pear-shaped with a green skin that remains green when ripe. The skin is smooth and slightly thinner than that of the Hass avocado.

The flesh is buttery and has a mild, slightly nutty flavor, making it versatile for a range of culinary uses.

The Fuerte avocado tree can grow to about 12 metres in the right environment, but it can be maintained at a smaller size with proper pruning.

This tree prefers a subtropical or tropical climate and is more cold-tolerant than other avocado varieties. A young tree will need to be covered in colder climates until it is established.

Position

Plant your Fuerte avocado tree in a sunny spot sheltered from the wind. Allow about 7.5 to 10 meters between your avocado trees. The tree’s size can be controlled for smaller gardens.

The Fuerte cultivar is a type B avocado, meaning that flowers open first as males, then close and reopen as females. So, plant them about 7.5 to 10 meters from a type A tree, which will have the opposite sex flower simultaneously. This helps bees to cross-pollinate.

Size

Avo trees can reach 12-15 meters in height, depending on soil conditions, with a canopy spread of up to 10.5 meters. In good conditions, it can grow about a meter a year.

Soil Type

The Fuerte avocado trees need plenty of water, but soggy soil can lead to root rot. So, the soil needs to be sandy or loamy that drains well. Soil with a pH of between 5.0 and 7.0 is best for avos. Plant with at least one bag of acid compost.

Improve soil quality by adding a bag of Volcanic Rock Dust (R25 per bag), which replaces minerals and trace elements that our soils have lost, add a bag of Superfrass (R25 per bag) at planting to boost nutrients (NPK and micronutrients) and support strong, healthy growth while also helping protect against pests.

Watering

Avocado trees are particularly demanding when it comes to water. They want plenty of it. A mature tree may drink up to 75 liters of water a day. Generally, your tree should be watered two to three times a week unless it has been particularly dry.

Mulching

Apply organic mulch to your avocado tree year-round.

Use from 2 to 5 centimeters of pine bark mulch to protect the roots from UV damage and drying out. It retains moisture and maintains an optimal pH. Do not let the mulch touch the plant stem, as it may cause infection or rot.

Fertilising

Apply 1 teaspoon of our slow-release nitrogen-rich All Plant fertiliser every 4-5 months.

Pruning

Prune your Fuerte avocado tree at the end of winter or the beginning of spring, using clean, sterilized pruning tools to reduce the risk of spreading diseases between trees. Keep the canopy open, light, and well ventilated by removing overcrowded or crossing branches. Trim off low-growing horizontal branches that hang close to the ground, and remove any dead, damaged, or diseased growth. Remove any shoots or growth that develops below the graft, as this growth comes from the rootstock and should not be allowed to develop.

Pests and Diseases

Regularly spraying with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control) can help manage common pests and support overall plant health. If aphids or mites are already present, first wash the tree thoroughly with a strong jet of water to dislodge the pests. Once the foliage has dried, spray with Neem Oil or EM Control according to the product instructions.

Practice good garden hygiene by removing fallen fruit and leaves from around the tree, as these can harbour pests and fungal diseases.

Avoid overwatering, as waterlogged soil can lead to root rot. During wet or humid periods, monitor the tree for signs of fungal diseases and ensure good air circulation around the foliage.

Harvesting

Only mature fruits will ripen once plucked, so leave them on the tree for as long as possible. As a general rule, pick the largest fruits first, as they are the most mature.

Pick while green and allow them to ripen indoors. Avocados do not ripen on the tree and will fall off when rotten.

When your Fuerte avocado is ready to eat, it will be firm but give under the pressure of your thumb.
