Position
Best in Full sun, but will also grow in semi-shade. Plant at least 4m apart.
Size
Tea trees will grow to about 4m.
Soil Type
Australian Tea Tree will tolerate most soils, including sandy, rocky, and even poorly drained ones.
Watering
Keep newly planted trees moist, but avoid overwatering.
Water your tree every second day after transplanting it. Thereafter, it will need a good soaking once a week, if there has been no rain.
Mulching
Apply organic mulch to your tree throughout the year.
Use from 2 to 5 centimetres of pine bark mulch to protect the roots from UV damage and drying out. It retains moisture and maintains an optimal pH. Do not let the mulch touch the plant stem, as it may cause infection or rot.
Fertilising
Apply our slow-release all-plant fertiliser. Apply 1 teaspoon every 4-5 months. The roots will absorb what they need.
Alternatively, apply a balanced fertiliser (such as 10-10-10) in early spring before new growth begins. Thereafter, fertilise annually in early spring.
Pruning
Regular pruning will keep your plants compact.
Pests and Diseases
This tree is generally free of pests and diseases, but spraying regularly with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control ) will assist in either prevention or after the fact.
Watch for root rot (caused by overwatering) and fungal infections during wet periods.
Harvesting
Harvest YOUNG stems and leaves.
