Ne Plus Ultra Almond Tree Grafted

R275.00

Prunus dulcis Ne Plus Ultra

Ne Plus Ultra is a French almond variety that produces large papershell nuts with a light chocolate-colored shell. These trees have a spreading growth habit and require cross-pollination with a compatible variety for reliable crops, as they are generally considered self-incompatible. The Nonpareil almond tree works best as its pollinator.

Mature trees can yield up to 6 kg of nuts annually.

Almond trees, including this variety, thrive best in hot, dry climates with low humidity and struggle in humid conditions due to disease risks

Position

Plant your almond trees in full sun with at least 4 metres of space all around for future growth.

Size

These trees will grow to a height of between 4 and 6 metres. They will fruit after 2 years and reach full fertility at 4 years.

Soil Type

Almond trees grow in all soil types, including chalky soil. Superfrass (R25 per bag) is a natural, high-quality organic growth enhancer and pesticide that you can add when planting.

Watering

The almond tree roots do not like to be waterlogged. Provide a deep soak every 4-5 days during spring and summer.

Mulching

All plants and trees benefit from mulch. Good mulch helps to keep the roots moist and protected from harmful UV rays. Mulch also adds nutrients to feed the plant. Use pine bark mulch to maintain the soil’s pH and to add organic matter.

It is essential to keep the mulch about 5 centimetres away from the stem. If it touches the plant, it may cause the branches to rot and get infected.

Fertilising

Apply 1 teaspoon of our slow-release, nitrogen-rich berry/all-plant fertiliser every 4-5 months. The roots will absorb what they require.

Pruning

Prune dead branches in winter. Maintain a V-shape in the canopy to improve light penetration.

Pests and Diseases

Borer worms target the trunk, even in young trees

Spraying regularly with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM) Control will help prevent or treat. If you already have aphids, mites, or mildew, wash the tree with a strong stream of water. When dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control. Consistency is key.

Harvesting

Flower buds open before the leaf buds in spring. Blossoms last about 2 weeks, and the fruit develops in mid-summer. The inner shell completes its development 3 months after blossoming. Harvesting takes place in February and March. Almond trees will give maximum yield at 7 to 9 years old, and can produce for up to 40 years.
