Peerless Almond Tree Grafted

R275.00

Prunus dulcis Peerless

The Peerless almond is a hard shell almond with a rich flavour as it grows well in areas with no frost. The fruit is covered in an outer green skin which dries and burts open, leaving the hard outer shell exposed. The peerless almond is self-incompatible as you need 2 trees to cross polinate each other.  The tree can produce up to 9kg of fruit.

Almond trees do not do well in a humid climate.

Position

Plant almond trees in full sun with at least four mts of space for future growth.

Size

These trees will grow to a height of between 4 and 6 mts. They should fruit after two years and reach total fertility at four years.

Soil Type

Almond trees grow in all soil types, including chalky soil.

Superfrass (R25 per bag) is a natural high quality organic growth enhancer and pesticide which you could add when planting.

Watering

The almond tree roots prefer to avoid being waterlogged. A good soaking every 4 to 5 days in spring and summer is preferable.

Mulching

All plants and trees benefit from mulch. Good mulch helps to keep the roots moist and protected from harmful UV rays. Mulch also adds nutrients to feed the plant. Use pine bark mulch to maintain the soil’s pH and add organic matter to the soil.

It is essential to keep the mulch about 5 centimetres away from the stem. If it touches the plant, it may cause the branches to rot and get infected.

Fertilising

Apply one teaspoon of our slow-release nitrogen-rich berry/All plant fertiliser every 4-5 months.

Pruning

Prune dead branches in winter. Maintain a V-shape in the canopy to allow for better light penetration.

Pests and Diseases

Watch out for borer worms, as they will attack the hardwood trunk of the tree. Even young trees are at risk.

Spraying regularly with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM) Control will assist in either prevention or after-the-fact treatment for aphids, mites, or mildew. If infested the wash the tree with a strong hose. When dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control. Consistency is key.

Harvesting

Flower buds open before the leaf buds in spring. Blossoms last about two weeks, and the fruit develops in mid-summer. The inner shell completes its development three months after blossoming. Harvesting takes place in February and March. Almond trees will give maximum yield at 7 to 9 years old and can produce for up to 40 years.
