Nikitski Ranni Pomegranate

R290.00

The Nikitski Ranni, a bushy shrub or small tree standing at a modest 2–4 metres, is a unique specimen in the pomegranate family. Its light, reddish-pink, smooth skin and rich, juicy, soft seeds offer a delightful balance of sweetness and tanginess. The fruit, which is medium to large in size and averages around 250–300 grams, boasts a high juice content, making it ideal for fresh consumption or juicing. The deep red arils, soft or semi-soft with a robust flavour, are slightly less acidic than most pomegranate varieties. Its attractive appearance makes it a popular choice for both culinary use and ornamental purposes.  Pomegranates are high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.
Nikitski Ranni is reasonably hardy for a pomegranate, tolerating light frost better than many tropical varieties.

Position

Full sun for optimal fruiting.

Soil

Sandy or clay loam, slightly acidic. Well-drained. pH 5.5 – 6.5. Add organic matter such as compost to improve soil drainage and ensure good soil structure for root development.

Improve soil quality by adding a bag of Volcanic Rock Dust (R25 per bag), which replaces minerals and trace elements that our soils have lost. Also add a bag of Superfrass (R25 per bag) at planting to boost nutrients (NPK and micronutrients) and support strong, healthy growth while also helping protect against pests. These products also assist with root-eating insects.

Watering

Drought-tolerant once established, but benefits from regular watering during fruit set and ripening.

Mulching

Mulching: Adding a thick layer of pine bark mulch, a natural and organic material that helps retain moisture in the soil, prevents weed growth, and protects the tree’s roots, while keeping it about 5 centimetres away from the tree trunk, is a beneficial practice. This reassurance will help you maintain your plant’s health.

Fertilising

Apply one teaspoon every 4-5 months of our slow-release all plant fertiliser. The roots will absorb what they need.

Pruning

Prune in winter (dormant season) to remove dead wood, crossing branches, and to shape the tree. Typically grows to 4m tall. Train as an open centre (vase shape) for good light penetration and air circulation.

Good garden hygiene is not just a practice; it’s a responsibility. It’s crucial for preventing the spread of pests and diseases. Remove fallen fruit and leaves regularly to keep your Nikitski Ranni healthy.

Pests & Diseases

Pests and diseases can impact fruit yield and tree health. Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control) will help with prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the tree with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.

Harvesting

This pomegranate bush fruits earlier than most other varieties.
