Dwarf Meyer Lemon

R690.00

The Dwarf Meyer Lemon is a compact, nearly thornless citrus tree, ideal for containers, patios and smaller gardens. Originating in China, Meyer Lemons are loved for their distinctive fruit and excellent flavour.

The fruit is smaller and rounder than traditional lemons, with a thin, smooth, fragrant golden-yellow skin. The juicy flesh is sweeter and less acidic, with a unique flavour that combines lemon and mandarin.

The fragrant peel is also excellent for cooking and baking, making it a beautiful, versatile addition to any home garden.

Position

Dwarf Meyer lemons thrive in sunlight and need 8 hours of sun per day.

Size

Meyer lemon trees can grow to about 2.5 mts tall.

Soil type

These trees require well-drained soil and do well in loamy, sandy soil—ideally with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Add a bag of acid compost when planting.

Give your plants the best possible start by adding a bag of Volcanic Rock Dust (R25 per bag) to the soil. Volcanic Rock Dust helps replenish essential minerals and trace elements depleted from our soils over time.

We also recommend adding a bag of Superfrass (R25 per bag) when planting. Superfrass provides a natural source of NPK and micronutrients to encourage strong, healthy growth, while also improving the plant’s natural resistance to pests.

Together, these products help create a nutrient-rich growing environment and give your plants the foundation they need to establish and thrive.

Mulch

Pine bark mulch around your tree makes it look appealing and lets the soil benefit from a steady supply of nutrients released as it slowly decomposes. Mulch also helps keep the soil moist on warmer days.

Watering

Citrus trees need soil that is moist but not wet. The best way to water citrus trees is to water deeply and infrequently. Water when the top 5 cm of soil is dry. Test by pressing a finger into the soil to the second knuckle and feel whether it is dry or moist.

Fertilising

Meyer lemons will thrive with our slow-release berry fertilizer (used for all plants). Apply one teaspoon every 4-5 months.

Pruning

Prune your Meyer Lemon tree periodically to keep it healthy and in shape. Cut back the branches that do not produce fruit. This lets the side branches spread and fill the space. The side branches will then be strong enough to bear the weight of the fruit. Cut any branches growing towards the trunk to increase airflow between the branches.

Pests and Diseases

Aphids, citrus psylla, red scale, citrus greening. Regular spraying with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control) will help prevent or control problems after they start. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the tree with a strong spray, then, when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.

Practice good garden hygiene (remove fallen fruit and leaves).

Watch for root rot (if overwatered) and fungal infections during wet periods.
