Dwarf Granny Smith Apple Tree

R690.00

Our Dwarf Granny Smith Apple trees are grafted onto dwarf M9 rootstock, producing compact, highly productive trees that can begin bearing fruit at a young age. Our current trees are of fruit-bearing age and, with suitable growing conditions, may produce fruit within the first year after planting.
Their compact growth makes them ideal for smaller gardens and allows them to be planted relatively close together. They are excellent for creating an apple-tree hedge, training against a wall or as an espalier, and growing in large containers.
Granny Smith is partially self-fertile and can produce some fruit when grown on its own. However, planting a compatible apple variety nearby will improve pollination, fruit set, and overall yield. Golden Delicious is an excellent pollination partner, while Anna Apple may also provide cross-pollination where their flowering periods overlap. Granny Smith performs best in areas that receive sufficient winter chill, with temperatures below 7°C helping to encourage reliable flowering and fruit production.
Granny Smith apples are famous for their attractive green skin and crisp, firm, juicy flesh. They have a refreshing sweet-tart flavour and are excellent for fresh eating, cooking, baking, and juicing. The tree produces beautiful white-to-soft-pink blossoms in spring, followed by fruit that generally ripens in late summer to early autumn, around February to March in South Africa.

Position

For extra winter chilling, apple trees should be planted in full sun, with 6 to 8 hours of sunshine, preferably on the south side of the property. Use a large container if not planting directly into the soil.

Apple trees are not suitable for warm climates like Durban.

Size

Due to the rootstock used, the tree can grow 3 metres tall and 1 metre wide. This makes it an ideal tree for any garden.

Soil type

This tree will grow well in well-drained soil with a pH of 5.8 to 7. The soil needs to be fertile and moisture-retentive. Use good potting soil and compost mix, leaving 10- 15 cm of roots.

When planting, add half a bag of our Volcanic Rock Dust (R25 per bag) and a bag of Superfrass (R25 per bag). This combination helps improve soil health, provides valuable minerals and nutrients, and encourages healthy root and plant development.

Watering

Avoid overwatering your tree, especially if it’s grown in a container. Watering once or twice a week is usually sufficient. You might water more during the summer when fruit is on the tree, especially during prolonged dry periods.

Mulching

Apply about 2 -5 centimetres of pine bark mulch to protect the roots from UV damage and drying out. It retains moisture and maintains an optimal pH. Do not let the mulch touch the plant stem, as it may cause infection or rot.

Fertilising

Apply one teaspoon of our slow-release nitrogen-rich All plant fertiliser every 4-5 months.

Pruning

This is usually done during winter when the tree is dormant. Prune the same as you would do a full-size fruit tree, removing damaged or diseased branches and ones that grow to the centre of the tree.

Pests and Diseases

Apple trees are prone to Powdery Mildew. Regular spraying with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM) Control will help with prevention or after-the-fact treatment. If you already have aphids, mites, or mildew, wash the tree with a strong hose. When dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control. Consistency is key.

Staking

Dwarf trees use rootstock with a very small root system, so they need support, especially during fruiting. Tying them to a stake to secure the rootstock is necessary.

Pollination

Self-fertile but will perform better with a different variety. Cross-pollinate with any other variety that blooms at the same time. Granny Smith Apple trees are recommended as a pollinator for all other apple trees.
