Yellow Dwarf Malayan Coconut (Cocos nucifera)

The Yellow Dwarf Malayan Coconut is highly prized for its ability to produce fruit at a young age while maintaining a manageable mature height of 8–9 metres. This compact, fast-growing palm begins flowering and fruiting when only a few metres tall, making harvesting easier than with many other coconut varieties. It is especially attractive with its bright yellow crownshaft, golden-yellow leaf stalks, and vibrant yellow, medium-sized coconuts.

A prolific producer, the Yellow Dwarf Malayan Coconut typically begins flowering and bearing fruit just 3–4 years after planting.

The medium-sized nuts contain sweet, refreshing coconut water. For the best flavour and highest water content, harvest the coconuts when they are bright yellow to greenish-yellow in colour, approximately 6 months after flowering.

If harvesting for the coconut flesh, allow the nuts to mature fully on the palm until they turn brown, or wait until the first nut naturally falls from the bunch. This usually occurs about 10 months after flowering.

The dried flesh of the coconut is mainly used to extract coconut oil.

Position

A tropical tree that requires full sun  (at least 6 – 8 hours of direct sunlight daily).

Size

Although a dwarf tree, it can grow up to 9 metres in 3 or 4 years.

Soil Type

Well-draining, loose, loamy soil. Well-suited for sandy, tropical environment. Adding half a bag of Volcanic Rock Dust and a bag of Superfrass will help promote rapid growth.

Watering

Regular, consistent moisture is essential for the plant’s health, especially when it is young.  Once established they are drought tolerant but fruit better with regular watering.

Mulching

Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimetres away from the tree trunk (any closer may cause excess moisture and damage the trunk). Pine Bark mulch helps retain moisture in the soil and prevents weeds.

Fertilising

Apply 3 teaspoons every 4 months of our slow-release all-plant fertiliser. The roots will absorb what they need.

Pruning

Remove ONLY dead, dying or diseased fronds and dry flower stalks. Never prune green fronds or healthy coconuts as these are reserves of essential food for the palm tree. Proper pruning keeps your tree healthy and prevents pests from moving in.

Harvesting

It is advisable to never let the coconuts fall to the ground. Rather lower them using a secured rope. Nuts that free-fall to the ground are must likely going to burst and the nuts crack losing all the water.

Pests & Diseases

This variety is highly valued for its natural resistance to Lethal Yellowing disease. Best to keep a watch and preferably use preventative measures by spraying with agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control)
