Summersun Peach Grafted 10L

R240.00

Prunus Persica ‘Summersun’

One of the defining features of Summersun peaches is their bright orange or yellow skin, often flushed with hues of red. The flesh of the peach is juicy, sweet, and aromatic, making it a delightful treat during the summer months.

Summersun peaches are large, yellow cling peaches. They are renowned for their exceptional balance of sweetness and acidity, resulting in a refreshing and flavorful eating experience. These peaches are often enjoyed fresh but can also be used in various culinary applications, including desserts, jams, and pies.

The flesh of the peach is juicy, sweet, and aromatic, making it a delightful treat during the summer months.

Peach trees require relatively cold winters. The chill hours are calculated at temperatures below 7 °C in winter.

If your peach tree does not receive enough chill hours, its flowers may not open, or they may only open a few.

As they spread blight, tomatoes and potatoes should be kept away from peach trees. Also, avoid planting raspberry bushes near peach trees.

Planting chamomile and comfrey adds nutrients to the soil, serving as a natural fertiliser for peach trees.

Position

Full sun is ideal, although they can tolerate some shade. However, they will yield more fruit and grow more vigorously with increased sun exposure.
They are easy to grow.

Size

Provide adequate spacing between Summersun peach trees, usually about 5 metres apart, to allow for proper air circulation and future growth.

Soil Type

Prepare the soil by removing weeds, rocks, and debris. Incorporate organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve soil fertility and drainage.

Adding half a bag of our Volcanic Rock Dust (R25 per bag) and a bag of Superfrass (R25 per bag) will assist in rapid growth. They also protect the roots from being eaten by insects.

Watering

Water every second day after transplanting for about a week; thereafter, reduce to twice a week in dry or hot weather for the next 2-3 months. Regular irrigation ensures the trees receive adequate moisture, especially during dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as excessively wet soil can lead to root rot.

Mulching

Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimetres away from the tree trunk (any closer may cause excess moisture and damage the trunk). This will retain the moisture in the soil and will prevent weeds from taking over.

Fertilising

Use our slow-release nitrogen-rich all-plant fertiliser. Apply 1 teaspoon every 4-5 months. The roots will absorb what they require.

Pruning

Prune your Summersun peach tree during the dormant season to promote its overall health and productivity. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to thin out excessive growth, thereby improving air circulation and sunlight penetration. Pruning helps maintain an open center structure, which aids in pest control and enhances fruit quality.

Pest and Disease Control

Regularly inspect the tree for signs of pests such as aphids, scale insects, and peach tree borers. Treat promptly or, preferably, use preventive measures by spraying with agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM) Control.

Disease prevention: Common peach diseases such as peach leaf curl, brown rot, and powdery mildew. Apply appropriate fungicides if necessary, or continue with Neem oil or EM Control as a preventative measure.

Peach trees require regular spraying before the onset of fruit and immediately after the buds have developed into small fruit. Continue regular organic spraying for high-quality peaches.

Harvesting

Summersun peach trees will blossom in August and are ready to harvest around November.
