Royal Beaut Apple Tree Grafted 20L

R590.00

Malus domestica ‘Royal Beaut’

Royal Beaut is a sweet, crisp apple cultivar that originated as a natural mutation of the Royal Gala apple. It has deep red, often striped skin and is valued for its taste, appearance, and storage quality.

It requires winter chilling below 7°C and is not self-pollinating, so it needs cross-pollinators such as Golden Delicious or Granny Smith. It typically flowers in early October and is harvested in late January.

Position:

Plant your Royal Beaut apple tree in a position that receives full sun throughout the day. Adequate sunlight is essential for optimal flowering, fruit development, and the characteristic deep red coloration of Royal Beaut apples. While the tree can tolerate partial shade, fruit yield, quality, and color development may be reduced.

Size:

A mature Royal Beaut apple tree can grow about 8–12 meters tall and 6–10 meters wide, depending on rootstock and conditions. Adequate spacing is important to allow full growth, good airflow, and better fruit quality.

Soil Type:

Royal Beaut apple trees grow best in fertile, well-drained soils with a slightly acidic pH of 6.0–6.8. Although adaptable to various soil types, they do not tolerate waterlogged conditions.

Before planting, loosen the soil to a depth of approximately 1–1.5 meters and incorporate well-decomposed compost or organic matter to improve soil structure, drainage, and nutrient availability.

Watering:

Water newly planted trees every second day during the first week after transplanting. Thereafter, reduce watering to two or three times per week during dry or hot conditions for the first 2–3 months.

Once established, Royal Beaut apple trees are relatively drought-tolerant but perform best when receiving approximately 25 mm of water every 7–10 days, either from rainfall or irrigation. Consistent soil moisture is particularly important during flowering and fruit development.

Mulching:

Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimeters away from the tree trunk (any closer may cause excess moisture and damage the trunk). This will retain soil moisture and prevent weeds from taking over.

Fertilising:

Royal Beaut apple trees benefit from regular fertilization to support healthy growth and fruit production. A balanced, all-purpose fertilizer can be applied at a rate of 1 teaspoon every 4–5 months.

Organic amendments such as Superfrass can also be used to improve soil health. It is a natural growth enhancer rich in macro-nutrients (N, P, K) and micro-nutrients (such as Zn and Cu), which support strong plant growth, root development, and overall tree vitality.

Pruning:

Pruning helps keep the Royal Beaut apple tree healthy, well-shaped, and productive. It improves sunlight and airflow, reducing disease risk and improving fruit quality. Young trees are trained early, while mature trees are pruned in winter by removing dead or crossing branches to encourage healthy growth and easier harvesting.

Pests and Diseases:

Royal Beaut apple trees can be affected by pests such as aphids, scale insects, mites, and codling moth, as well as diseases like apple scab, powdery mildew, and root rot. Regular monitoring helps with early detection. Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control) can be used for prevention and treatment. If you already have pests, wash the tree with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.

Good hygiene—such as removing fallen leaves and fruit—reduces disease risk. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot and fungal problems.

Harvesting:

Fruit is ready for harvest when it develops its characteristic deep red coloration, reaches full size, and separates easily from the tree when gently lifted and twisted. Handle fruit carefully during harvesting to prevent bruising and maintain storage quality.
