Abate Fetel Pear Tree Grafted 10L

R240.00

Pyrus communis ‘ Abate Fetel’

Hot climates, such as Durban, are unsuitable for growing pear trees.

Abate Fetel pears are best eaten when they are just barely soft. The fruit has a slightly crisp melting texture with a rich and sweet taste.

The elongated fruit of the Abate Fetel pear has an attractive yellowish-brown russet with pink-blushed cheeks.

The Abate Fetel Pear tree will do best with another Forelle Pear tree as a pollinator.

Position

This pear tree grows well in a partially sunny spot.  It is a hardy tree that does well in most settings.

Size

The Abate Fetel pear tree grows to an average height of 3 to 5 metres.

Soil Type

A light, sandy soil that drains well is perfect for this tree. This type of soil is loose enough to stay moist, while not becoming flooded and for allowing the roots to grow through it with ease. A neutral pH (around 7) works best.

Watering

The pear tree requires moderate watering to keep the soil moist. Be careful not to overwater it.

Mulching

Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimetres away from the tree trunk (any closer may cause excess moisture and damage the trunk). This will retain the moisture in the soil and will prevent weeds from taking over.

Fertilising

Apply 1 teaspoon of our slow-release nitrogen-rich berry fertiliser every 4-5 months.

Pruning

Cut your tree back to about four healthy shoots every winter, and thin out excess and unruly spurs. This encourages fruit and flowers to grow.

Pests and Diseases

Aphids, citrus psylla, red scale, citrus greening. Spraying regularly with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control ) will assist in either prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the tree with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.

Practice good garden hygiene (remove fallen fruit and leaves).

Watch for root rot (if overwatered) and fungal infections during wet periods.

Harvesting

Pick your Abate Fetel pears when they are soft to the touch and the fruit easily loosen from the tree when held in your hand and lifted.
