Chaya Spinach Tree

R270.00

Cnidoscolus Aconitifolius

Fast-growing tropical evergreen shrub with smooth green leaves and thick succulent branches.  Sometimes small white flowers appear.

Considered one of the Superfoods, their leaves are rich in protein, vitamins, calcium, iron, and fiber.  Chaya is said to have three times the nutritional value of other green, leafy vegetables and is often used as a spinach substitute. DO NOT EAT RAW.  The leaves must be cooked for at least 20 minutes.

Although considered to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, always consult a qualified healthcare professional before consuming.

Position

Plant it in a warm, sunny location about 4m apart.  They can also tolerate semi-shade.  During winter the Chaya needs protection from frost.

Size

These small trees can reach 3m.

Soil Type

It can grow in any well-drained soil, but prefers a pH range of 5.5 -6.5. Add at least one bag of acid compost to your mix.

Watering

Keep plants moist for optimal leaf production, but avoid overwatering.

Mulching

Apply organic mulch to your nectarine tree throughout the year.

Use from 2 to 5 centimetres of pine bark mulch to protect the roots from UV damage and drying out. It retains moisture and maintains an optimal pH. Do not let the mulch touch the plant stem, as it may cause infection or rot.

Fertilising

Apply our slow-release all-plant fertiliser. Apply 1 teaspoon every 4-5 months. The roots will absorb what they need.

Alternatively, apply a balanced fertiliser (such as 10-10-10) in early spring before new growth begins.

Pruning

Regular pruning will keep the plant compact and make harvesting easier.

Pests and Diseases

This tree is generally free of pests and diseases, but spraying regularly with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control ) will assist in either prevention or after the fact.

Watch for root rot (caused by overwatering) and fungal infections during wet periods.

Harvesting

Harvest the leaves and tender stems
