Dwarf Golden Delicious Apple Tree

R690.00

Malus domestica ‘Golden Delicious’

The Dwarf Golden Delicious is a compact, deciduous apple tree that produces beautiful white-to-soft-pink blossoms in spring and a generous crop of golden-yellow apples in late summer. The fruit is crisp, juicy, and sweet with a rich honey-like flavor, making it excellent for fresh eating, baking, cooking, and juicing.

This variety requires winter chilling below 7°C for reliable flowering and fruit production. Golden Delicious is partially self-fertile but will produce heavier crops when planted with a compatible pollinator, such as Granny Smith, Early Red, or Anna Apple.

Position

Plant your apple tree in full sun for the best fruit yield. They can tolerate some shade, but you’ll likely get fewer fruits from them.

Dwarf varieties are ideal for container growing because they remain compact.

Size

The compact dwarf Golden Delicious apple tree typically reaches 2 to 3 meters in height and spread when mature.

Soil Type

APrefers well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0 to 7.0. It performs best in nutrient-rich sandy loam improved with well-composted organic matter. Add half a bag of our Volcanic Rock Dust (R25 per bag) and a bag of Superfrass (R25 per bag). This combination will facilitate rapid growth while also protecting the roots from insect damage.

Watering

Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods and while fruit is developing. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

Trees in pots will need more regular watering. Water the tree when the top inch of soil feels dry.

Mulching

Apply a thick layer of pine bark mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch 20 to 30 cm away from the trunk to prevent excess moisture around the stem.

Fertilising

Use Superfrass when planting your apple tree to provide essential macro- and micronutrients, promote strong growth, and help protect against pests. Thereafter, apply 1 teaspoon of slow-release, nitrogen-rich berry/all-plant fertilizer every 4-5 months to support ongoing healthy development.

Pruning

Prune during winter dormancy or early spring to maintain shape and encourage productive fruiting wood. Remove dead, damaged, diseased, or crossing branches as required.

Only give a heavy pruning when your apple tree is at least 3 years old.

Pests and Diseases

Golden Delicious apples may be affected by aphids, mites, powdery mildew, and apple scab.  Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM) Control will help prevent or treat. If you already have aphids, mites, or mildew, wash the tree with a strong stream of water. When dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control. Consistency is key.

Harvesting

Fruit is typically ready for harvest from late summer to early autumn. Apples are ready when they develop their characteristic golden-yellow color and can be removed easily with a gentle twist.
