Pepperdew in RS Pot

“Pepperdew” is a registered trademark for small, round peppers discovered in South Africa in the early 1990s. Typically red when ripe and glossy like cherry tomatoes, Pepperdew peppers offer a unique combination of sweetness and mild heat, making them ideal for those who prefer milder flavours.

These versatile peppers are commonly used in salads, sandwiches, pasta, and pizzas. They are often sold pickled or preserved and can be stuffed with cheese or used as toppings. Additionally, they enhance sauces and pair well with meats, especially in Mediterranean and South African dishes.

This Pepperdew plant is grown in a Root Stimulating Pot. It’s perfect for small properties or cold climates, as these pots are lightweight and easy to bring indoors during the winter. Additionally, it makes a wonderful gift when presented in a container!

Position

Pepperdew plants thrive in warm climates, similar to other peppers. They require temperatures between 21°C and 29°C for optimal growth.

These plants need full sun for at least 6-8 hours a day. Make sure to choose a location that gets plenty of sunlight.

Soil

Pepperdew plants prefer well-draining, sandy or loamy soil. Avoid heavy, clay soils that can trap water and cause root rot.

The ideal soil pH for growing Pepperdew peppers is between 6.0 and 7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral).

Incorporate organic compost into the soil to improve its fertility and structure, which helps retain moisture and nutrients.

Watering

Pepperdew plants require consistent moisture, but overwatering can lead to root rot. Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not soggy.

Water at the base of the plant, avoid getting water on the leaves to prevent fungal diseases.

Mulching

Apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weeds.

Apply organic mulch to your tree all year round.

Use from 2 to 5 centimetres of pine bark mulch to protect the roots from UV damage and drying out. It retains moisture, and maintains an optimal pH. Do not let the mulch touch the plant stem, as it may cause infection or rot.

Fertilising

Over-fertilizing with nitrogen can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of fruit production.

Apply 1 teaspoon every 4-5 months of our slow-release all-plant fertiliser. The roots will absorb what they need.

Pests

Treat promptly or preferably use preventative measures by spraying with agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control)

Harvesting

Pepperdew peppers are harvested when they are fully ripe, which is when they turn bright red.

Use garden scissors or pruning shears to cut the peppers from the plant, leaving a small stem attached.

Fresh Pepperdew peppers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 weeks. To preserve them longer, you can pickle or jar them, which is a common way of preserving this pepper variety. Pepperdew plants can grow to be around 1 to 1.5m tall and wide, so ensure they have enough space to spread out.
