Lane Late Navel Orange

The Lane Late variety is a game-changer, extending the availability of fresh navel oranges by about 2–3 months after other varieties. This makes it a perfect backyard cultivar, and an exciting prospect for citrus enthusiasts. A unique combination of  well balanced sweet,  juicy flavour, low acidity and virtually seedless nature.

A medium/large round to oval shaped fruit. The skin is an easy peel bright orange colour.

Scroll Down for Growing Information:

Position

Full sun (minimum 6–8 hours daily).

Soil

Well-draining, sandy loam preferred; slightly acidic to neutral pH. Add at least one bag of acidic compost to the soil. Adding half a bag of our Volcanic Rock Dust (R25 per bag) and a bag of Superfrass (R25 per bag) will assist in rapid growth. They also protect the roots from being eaten by insects.

Watering

Regular deep watering; reduce slightly in winter

Mulching

Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimetres away from the tree trunk (any closer may cause excess moisture and damage the trunk). This will retain the moisture in the soil and will prevent weeds from taking over.

Fertilising

Apply 1 teaspoon of our slow-release nitrogen-rich berry fertiliser every 4-5 months.

Pruning

Lightly Prune in winter (dormant season) to remove dead wood and shape the tree. Typically grows to 3–5 meters tall with rounded canopy.

Train as an open center (vase shape) for good light penetration and air circulation.

Pests & Diseases

Aphids, citrus psylla, red scale, citrus greening. Spraying regularly with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control ) will assist in either prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the tree with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.

Practice good garden hygiene (remove fallen fruit and leaves).

Watch for root rot (if overwatered) and fungal infections during wet periods.

Harvesting

A late ripening fruit – June to September with excellent shelf life and holds well on the tree after harvest.
