Bitter Leaf Tree

Vernonia amygdalina

Bitter Leaf Trees thrive in tropical and subtropical climates. They require warm temperatures and can be sensitive to frost.

The Bitter Leaf Tree is valued for its potential medicinal properties in traditional medicine. It has been used to treat various health issues, including malaria, fever, gastrointestinal problems, etc. Some research suggests that compounds found in the leaves may possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.

The tree is a versatile plant with culinary and medicinal value in African cultures. It can be a rewarding addition to your garden or landscape, offering both unique flavors in cooking and potential health benefits.

These leaves are a staple vegetable in soups and stews in many countries. Due to its bitterness, the leaves are washed several times, dried, and used to prepare meat dishes.

The sticks and twigs of the plant can be used as chewing sticks for dental hygiene; the stems are used for soap.

Medical researchers have proven that bitterleaf contains many medicinal properties, which range from antimicrobial to decorative.

Position

Plant this tree in areas with full sun as it will perform best in humid conditions.

Size

These plants can grow up to 2-5 metres tall.  For farming, these trees can be planted 1-2 metres apart.

Soil type

Bitter leaf plant will perform well in soil with a pH of 5.5-7.  This is quite acidic, so add some acid compost to your garden soil or potting soil if in a container. They do perform best in well-drained humus-rich soil and prefer a moist environment.

Watering

Watering is mainly needed in times of dry weather. Water only as is needed.

Mulching

Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimetres away from the tree trunk (any closer may cause excess moisture and damage the trunk). This will retain the moisture in the soil and will prevent weeds from taking over.

Fertilising

Apply 1 teaspoon of our slow-release nitrogen-rich berry fertiliser every 4-5 months.

Pruning

Regular pruning will help keep the tree smaller

Pests and Diseases

Aphids, citrus psylla, red scale, citrus greening. Spraying regularly with Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control ) will assist in either prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the tree with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.

Practice good garden hygiene (remove fallen fruit and leaves).

Watch for root rot (if overwatered) and fungal infections during wet periods.
