7 Pot Jonah

The “7 Pot” chillies are known for their intense heat. They are often so spicy that they can flavour seven pots of curry. These chillies are a Trinidadian cuisine staple and are enjoyed for their fruity flavour and extreme heat level.

The 7 Pot Jonah is particularly fiery, measuring between 1,400,000 and 1,600,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units). This pepper typically has a wrinkled and bumpy appearance, characteristic of many “7 Pot” varieties.

Chilli peppers grow best in hot climates, won’t tolerate frost, and enjoy full sun. The ideal growing temperatures are between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Chillies can grow in containers as long as they are planted in the sun or on a sun-filled windowsill. The size of the pot should be at least 10cm in diameter. When you notice roots growing out of the drainage holes, it is time to replant into a larger container.

The plant itself can grow over 1 meter tall and displays green leaves and small white flowers before producing its pods.

Position

The 7 Pot Jonah thrives in hot and tropical climates, typically found in regions with temperatures between 21°C to 29°

These peppers are sensitive to frost and should be planted after the danger of frost has passed.

In regions with intense sun, partial afternoon shade might be beneficial to protect the plants from heat stress during the hottest part of the day.

Soil

The plant prefers loamy, well-drained soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 6.8. Good drainage is essential to prevent waterlogged roots.

It benefits from nutrient-rich soil; adding half a bag of our Volcanic Rock Dust (R25 per bag) and a bag of Superfrass (R25 per bag) will assist in rapid growth

Watering

Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy. The plants prefer deep watering to encourage strong root development.

Too much water can lead to root rot, so make sure the soil is well-drained.

Mulch

Use from 2 to 5 centimetres of pine bark mulch to protect the roots from UV damage and drying out. It retains moisture and maintains an optimal pH. Do not let the mulch touch the plant stem, as it may cause infection or rot.

Re-apply every 3-4 months.

Pruning

Prune the plants by removing any dead or damaged leaves. You can also pinch back the growing tips to encourage branching and more fruit production.

Fertilising

Use a balanced fertiliser (such as 10-10-10) during planting and again every 4-6 weeks throughout the growing season to encourage healthy growth.

Too much nitrogen can lead to excessive foliage growth with little fruit production.

Apply 1 teaspoon every 4-5 months of our slow-release all-plant fertiliser. The roots will absorb what they need.

Pests & Diseases

Watch for pests like aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies.

Prevent fungal diseases like blight by providing good airflow and avoiding overhead watering. Crop rotation helps avoid soil-borne diseases.

Treat promptly or preferably use preventative measures by spraying with agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control)

Harvesting

These peppers mature from green to red. Harvest them when fully coloured and firm.

When handling 7 Pot Jonah peppers, it’s essential to wear gloves and avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, after handling the peppers.
